Flashes Release 2012 Schedule
The Kent State softball program recently released its 2012 schedule, which begins Feb. 10 at the UNLV Invitational. The Golden Flashes will start the season with five weekend tournaments and compete in six different states in February and March, before their home and conference opener on March 30 against Central Michigan.

Sixty years ago, Lois Youngen was absorbing home plate collisions with her 5-3, 115-pound frame. Today, she collides with the challenge of preserving the memories of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. As current president of the AAGPBL Players Association, a non-profit organization, Youngen’s endeavors include an annual trip to Fan Fest during this week’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Playing the sport she loves in a foreign country has been a culture shock for Kylie Reynolds. The former Kent State softball pitcher has been forced to overcome a language barrier and playing against older competition in Italy since March. Her play on the field has not reflected the adversity she has faced.

Finchum Named Academic All-MAC; Seven Flashes Earn Honorable Mention
Kent State’s Holly Finchum (Galloway, Ohio/Bishop Ready) added another honor to her long list of awards this season when she was recently named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Softball Team. Seven other Golden Flashes (Danielle Abernathy, Jess Carmichael, Maleeya Coleman, Mary Holt, Shannon Laughlin, Markie Pozzuto, Sarah Starr) earned Academic Honorable Mention.

Flashes Round Out Incoming Class with Signing of Kirkpatrick
The Kent State softball team rounded out its latest recruiting class with the addition of Kimberly Kirkpatrick (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls), who will join the Golden Flashes along with four other freshmen this fall. A three-time All-Ohio selection, Kirkpatrick was a left-handed shortstop in high school, but will likely see action in the outfield at Kent State. This week, she won the OHSAA’s distinguished Delores Billhardt Scholarship based on her scholastic record, personal achievement, school and community activities.

Kent State freshman Abbey Ledford (West Liberty, Ohio/West Liberty Salem) was named Mid-American Conference All-Tournament Team Sunday at Firestone Stadium. Ledford hit .500 in three tournament games and helped the the Golden Flashes earn a 5-2 comeback victory over Eastern Michigan on Thursday.

Kent State’s season came to an end Friday with a 2-1 setback against Central Michigan during day three of the MAC Tournament at Firestone Stadium. The Golden Flashes were among the final six teams standing in the tournament for the sixth consecutive season, but the KSU offense could not take advantage of its base runners the way it did during most of the regular season.

Kent State showed plenty of fight and plenty of offense Saturday, but it was not enough in a 19-12 loss to Northern Illinois at the Diamond at Dix. The Golden Flashes responded to an 11-3 deficit by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the third. After six innings, KSU had allowed 14 runs, 10 hits, seven walks, two hit-by-pitches and committed six errors, but found itself down by just two runs (14-12).

Kent State fell to 0-4 in extra-inning games this season as Marshall scored seven runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Golden Flashes 17-16 Sunday. After dropping a nine-inning battle with Marshall on Friday and sitting through a rain delay before a cancellation Saturday, KSU’s hitters were eager to get back on the field Sunday, scoring eight runs in the first two innings.

Ten Kent State softball players were recently named National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar Athletes for the 2009-10 school year. The NFCA also released its top team grade point averages, where the Golden Flashes ranked 27th with a 3.368 GPA over two semesters. With a long history of academic success, KSU has had 14 different players honored as Academic All-Americans and has consistently ranked in the top 30 team GPAs.

Carla Brookbank-Schaal was a featured pitcher and hitter for the Akron Racers from 1999-2000. The Green, Ohio native currently resides with her husband, Bob and her four boys Jack (6 ½), Nick (5), Mike (3 ½) and Luke (20 mos.) while serving as a full-time MOM, part-time nurse practitioner and part-time softball instructor through her company Brookbank Fastpitch.
