Dutton tallies her second goal of the season with her first-half strike
BERKELEY, Calif. – The Kent State women's soccer team (3-2-0) dropped a 4-1 decision to San Francisco Sunday afternoon in the final day of action at the 16th annual Cal Invitational.
"It was a disappointing weekend in terms of results, but I think we learned a lot as a team," said head coach Rob Marinaro. "We will look to clean some things up and work to continue to improve."
Sophomore Jaclyn Dutton (Bridgeport, Ohio) tallied Kent State's lone goal, converting on a penalty kick in the 31st minute.
Tied at 1-1 at the intermission, San Francisco scored three unanswered goals in the second half to topple the Golden Flashes.
The Golden Flashes fell behind early, conceding the game's first goal in the third minute.
But Kent State recovered, and in the 31st minute Kent State's pressure came to fruition when Dutton was fouled in the penalty box. Dutton converted on her spot kick to knot the game at 1-1.
San Francisco (1-4-0) took the lead in the 51st minute with a penalty kick of their own and added goals in the 68th and 85th minutes to seal the result.
Kent State goalkeeper Kelly Sherwood (Strongsville, Ohio) made four saves. Despite out-shooting San Francisco 15-14, Kent State only mustered six shots on goal to the Dons' eight.
The Golden Flashes head home for a non-conference game against Youngstown State Friday, Sept. 9 at Zoeller Field.
